Differences of Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities

If you’ve decided that you need to get treatment for a drug or alcohol addiction, you may be wondering what type of program is right. After all, there is a multitude of different options each with their own unique differences. While some people will benefit from counselling or group therapy only, many will require extensive treatment. Rehabs, both inpatient and outpatient, can offer this level of care to help you achieve long term sobriety. However, each one of these options has their own unique distinctions which may make them more or less suitable to your personal needs.

“Asking for help is the first important step.” If you’re not sure where to begin, or feel overwhelmed about the different forms of drug and alcohol treatment, please read the following overview of your options. To fully understand what is most appropriate, it is advisable to contact a counsellor, doctor, family member or rehab facility.

Residential Rehab

Residential treatment centres, also known as an inpatient rehab, typically have programs which last for a minimum of 28 days with further 30, 60 or 90 days of continuing treatment available. The facilities are typically available on a volunteered check in basis to men and women. However, some centres are specifically geared to religions, sex or ages. A residential rehab will have 24/7 on site support, and patients will not be allowed to leave without permission or a staff member.

In general, most people who seek the assistance of an inpatient rehab will either have a very strong addiction to drugs or alcohol and require the support of the facility or have been to outpatient centres before but have since relapsed.

Some people will require a drug or alcohol detox especially when there are concerns of withdrawals. Detox services may be included in the inpatient program. The detox may be done on site or at a nearby hospital where all medical equipment is on hand just in case of emergency. After the detox, men and women will begin an intensive program for recovery. Learning about addictions, identifying behaviours and patterns, getting support, resolving problems, restoring health and discovering new hobbies may be included in this form of extensive treatment.

Private vs. Public Rehab

There are 2 primary types of residential rehab, private or public. While both can be very valuable to anyone with an addiction, they each have a notable difference. A public rehab is usually funded by the state or various organisations. These facilities are often low-cost or free; meaning there may be a lengthy waiting list. So, if you need to begin treatment immediately, a public rehab may not be the most suitable. Moreover, these places generally have very large capacities for patients and a high staff to patient ratio; individual attention and constant support may not be provided. Any rehab is better than no rehab, so if a public inpatient rehab is most practical it is advisable to reach out to one of these centres. However, if your budget and time can afford you to go to a private rehab centre, please consider this option. A private rehab (in general) will have treatment programs which are custom tailored to the individual. This is vital for the most effective treatment because everyone is different. Staff to patient ratios will be smaller; with a 1:1 ratio being the most ideal. Specialised therapies, holistic healing sessions, yoga, excursions, dietary advice, employment and financial skills and counselling may all be part of the programme.

Ultimately, the level of care at a private rehab in Thailand, or elsewhere, will be top notch. These programs are emotionally, physically and mentally supportive. This will allow the whole body and mind to recover from long term drug and alcohol abuse. In addition, residential treatment programmes are home to a therapeutic community of recovering addicts and nurturing staff; it’s a place where experiences can be shared and empathy can be given. This total care is what helps a person to overcome an addiction.

Outpatient Rehab

An outpatient treatment program has many similarities to that of a residential centre; however, the overall structure is different. These facilities give patients the opportunity to leave whenever they have completed the days’ program. Therefore, if you have work, family or school commitments which cannot be broken, outpatient rehabs are the most ideal. Non-residential centres do not offer the secure environment that residential rehabs have. Men and women in the program will be able to return back to their normal environment and must control their self by abstaining from using. Outpatient rehabs will offer a variety of different support groups, therapy sessions and counselling. For some people, these centres are more suitable because of their scheduling and ease of access.

Sober Living Homes

Patients may have the option to move to a sober living home once they have completed a residential rehab programme. These drug and alcohol free environments give people the freedom to come and go, but still offer a steady structure to aid in the beginning days of recovery. These places can be very supportive and provide a healthy environment to continue learning new behaviours and skills as well as, explore inner healing and self growth. Many quality rehabs will offer a sober living home on site or nearby.
